Android 8.0 Oreo Now Official; OTA Update Coming Soon for Pixel and Nexus Devices

After initially unveiling Android O in March and releasing the first Developer Preview, Google today announced the release of the final version of the OS. Dubbed Android 8.0 Oreo which comes with improved performance and security, the code of the OS is being pushed to AOSP, with final builds for Nexus and Pixel devices under final testing.

Android 8.0 Oreo comes with plenty of little features aimed at refining the overall user experience of the OS. This includes features like Picture-in-Picture, Notification Dot, improved battery life thanks to a limit on the number of apps that can run in the background, and more. Google says that the final Android 8.0 Oreo update for its Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P devices is currently under carrier testing, and it should start rolling out the update in phases soon. Additionally, the company will also upload the final Android 8.0 factory images for compatible Nexus and Pixel devices once the carrier testing is complete.

If you are already running the fourth Developer Preview release of Android Oreo on your Pixel or Nexus device, you will automatically get an OTA update to the final build in the coming few days.

Google also says that it has been working with Android OEMs like Sony, HTC, Huawei, LG, Nokia and others on updating their devices to Android 8.0 Oreo by the end of this year.
